IPL 2025 promises electrifying matches, surprises everywhere, and performances that will be remembered. While established teams like Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru have been flexing their muscles, it has been nice to see other teams, like a few underdogs, making their way, proving that IPL is a tournament with surprises waiting to come out from around the corner. 

1. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

When they are traditionally a bowling team, for some reason, SRH has morphed into a batting side this year. With batsmen like Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma blasting at full speed, we have seen SRH numerous times around the number 250 runs. Pat Cummins has given us stability with his captaincy, and they have become consistent and can be considered one of the greatest contenders. If they keep up the momentum, they are likely to lift their second IPL Trophy! 

 2. Rajasthan Royals (RR)

Now, the first-ever champions of IPL have always generally choked in the knockouts. With the numbers on the board above the surface this year, though they look very solid, to get rid of the jinx. Rajasthan has the young guns like Yashasvi Jaiswal, with Vaibhav Suryavanshi complemented with the experience of Sanju Samson at the top of the order. The spinners, led by Wanindu Hasranga, add depth, and if their seamers come in handy, RR could be a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs.

3. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)

Finishing in the mid-table in IPL 2024, LSG has shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season. With a balanced composition featuring experienced players like Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh, and youngsters like Ravi Bishnoi, it is under LSG’s bowling section where the most brilliance has shown forth. If they can get some consistency from their batting, LSG poses the threat of upsetting the big teams deep into the tournament. 

4. Delhi Capitals (DC)

In Axar Patel’s leadership, Delhi Capitals have mixed aggression and strategy. With KL Rahul’s star rising again, the inclusion of Jake Fraser-McGurk further strengthened the middle order. Featuring the potent bowling trio of Starc, Natarajan, and Kuldeep Yadav-DC stands armed to challenge anyone. To keep their momentum would set them up to become the dark horse in the IPL 2025. 

5. Punjab Kings (PBKS)

The perennial underachievers, the Punjab Kings, have gone through a transformation this year. With Shreyas Iyer at the helm, cohesion and strategy are both on the upswing. The team composition and aggressive auction approach have put PBKS in the position to take on the biggies. Provided the foreign talents can click, PBKS would fast become the surprise package of this IPL.

Dark horses contribute unpredictability and excitement to the IPL. Their ascendancy generally intervenes in the reign of classical giants, thus keeping the fans more engaged. There are always talented young players in these teams eager to make a name for themselves, and their stories end up being the talk of the town throughout the season.
